I visited this newish establishment shortly after it opened in August and was rather disappointed with the limited range. But this week I ventured there again to give them the benefit of the doubt, and was not disappointed.
Before this “vegetarian, vegan, raw” cafe/restaurant offered just one vegan main and raw foodies could only look forward to a couple of boring salads (by that standard, any cafe could label themselves raw). But the menu has now expanded exponentially, and with considerable flair.
With breakfast served until 5pm, a lunch menu spanning a couple of pages and a drink section to match, it took us longer to choose our orders than to wait for their arrival.
We finally settled on the vegan big breakfast and raw spicy almond tacos. The big breakfast was lovely, if not groundbreaking (beans, mushrooms, avocado, spinach, tomato and toast) and our tacos were surprisingly delicious (and filling). Even my companion – vocally dubious about raw food – gladly wolfed his share down after an initial sceptical nibble.

We braved a kiwi green smoothie and were delighted to fight over the banana berry yoghurt smoothie – vegans rejoice: you can specify coconut yoghurt and almond, soy or rice milk.

The portions were by no means over-sized, yet we were so well sated as to prevent us sampling their vegan sweets and organic coffee.
The staff were all very friendly, attentive and genuine and the atmosphere was genial and relaxed. Situated on a pleasant corner on Darling Street with indoor and outdoor seating, Ungaro Raw is decorated with rustic charm (and obligatory green, brown and recycled flourishes).

A cheaper eat you will find, but our bill wasn’t anything to break the bank and we certainly didn’t pay it grudgingly. With mostly organic produce and healthy, innovative and enticing options, I will definitely be back to work my way through the menu…
